Stuff Busters Program Students will:
Dive into a bag of trash to find out that what we throw away every day doesn't really go "away". Students investigate ways they can reduce the amount of trash that ends up in the landfill by making smart choices every day.
- Identify what waste materials are recyclable and the length of time trash items take to decompose.
- Understand the process of composting and its benefits
- Identify ways waste/trash can be eliminated from landfill
- Make decisions about how they dispose of their daily stuff
- Become familiar with concepts of rethinking their “stuff” from the beginning

1) How much trash? For a day (maybe the day they clean out their desks), check the class garbage can and see how much waste just one class room generates. Check the cafeteria, or playground garbage cans to see how much goes in those cans in just one day. (What we throw away each day affects the amount of waste that goes into landfill)
2) Where does our stuff come from? What materials in your class room are manmade, what are made of natural things? Make a class list of things made of:
Manufactured - nonrenewable materials that consume (use up) resources - gasoline/oil, metal bike frame, TV
Natural - renewable materials - paper, cardboard, food, leather, cotton cloth/rope, wood pencil,(Composition of an item affects the length of time it takes to decompose)
3) RETHINK Discuss the difference between a want and a need. Make a class list of things they want & what they need. (Rethink the way we throw good things away and buy unneeded items)
