Project Management Office
What is PMO?
The Project Management Office (PMO) is services and support based, and was established and is managed by the IT Planning Team. The PMO goal and mission is to provide City employees who are managing City projects with tools, knowledge, and support to help ensure project success. Below is a list of what the PMO has to offer:
- Training - project management basics, soft skills (ie: managing cross-functional teams), and effective communication
- Mentoring - shadow project management program, where you can learn hands-on by assisting a PM (Project Manager)
- Project Document Archive (knowledge bank) - staff can use previous project documentation as a reference
- Project Management Process and Tools - streamline project management processes and provide a consistent approach
- Project Management Community - provide a mechanism to share lessons learned and ask questions of other City project managers
- Process Improvement - continue to improve our processes and tools as we internalize lessons learned
- Project Portfolio Communication:
- Provide a rollup of active projects, statuses, and resource requirements
What is a project?
A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or result. A project has defined requirements (specific goals and objectives), a defined schedule and deadline, a pre-defined budget, clear closure criteria, requires integration of knowledge and experience from various organizations, and is a job done once. It is temporary (having a definite start and end point) and unique (done once, as distinguished from operations).The project team is transitory, meaning that it exists only for the duration of the project.
In addition to offering individual assistance according to an as-needed basis for City employees running City projects, IT's Planning and Administration division hosts training classes for project management. This effort was mentioned in the Sierra College Fall Newsletter of 2012.
Project Management Methodology
Basic information on what constitutes a project, what is expected from a project manager, team roles and responsibilities, and tools/steps neccessary in the project's lifetime.
*It is ultimately up to the project manager, sponsor, and project team to determine what is appropriate and to what degree of rigor is required for the project. If you are unsure as to what category your project may fall under, please do not hesitate to contact one of the IT Planning Team members.
