On June 3, the Roseville City Council approved its support to continue the 4th of July Parade following a commitment from Johny Five Productions officials to organize the parade and reimburse the city for its costs, including street closures. Their website is www.rosevilleparade.com and you can learn who to contact, how to donate, and how to apply to participate in the parade.
The City is still sponsoring the 4th of July Celebration in Royer Park from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., with the Capitol Pops Concert Band, funded by Performing Arts of Roseville, playing at noon. Food and beverages will be available for purchase from local vendors, and families are welcome to bring a picnic (no barbecues, alcohol or glass bottles, please). Crime Stoppers will again organize and host the annual “Run Crime Out of Roseville” 5K Fun Run/Walk. (It is relevant to note that the FBI released statistics June 1 that show that Roseville’s already-low violent crime rate dropped to its lowest point in 20 years and the City now has the 17th lowest violent crime rate in the state among large cities.)
To reduce costs, the City of Roseville and Sierra View Country Club have agreed to partner to put on the annual fireworks show, with the fireworks being launched from Sierra View Country Club. Last year, the City spent $11,000 on its own fireworks display. This year, the City is contributing $4,000 and Sierra View is contributing $3,000 toward the fireworks display. The fireworks display will still be free to watch from the Placer County Fairgrounds, even if you are not attending the race at the speedway that evening.
The community-based Fourth of July Parade had been conducted in the past through a partnership between the Roseville Chamber of Commerce and the City of Roseville. The logistical support (street closures, cleanup, etc.) that the City had provided was not funded in the FY 2010 budget, which begins July 1, 2009, due to an extremely challenging budget year, which saw annual general funding of community events drop from more than $100,000 to approximately $30,000.
