Lock your doors

Up to a quarter of thefts from vehicles nationally are from unlocked cars. Get in the habit of double-checking locks.

Stash before — not after — you park

Get in the habit of putting shopping bags in the trunk right when you return to the vehicle, rather than after you park at the next place. Don't show thieves what you have.

Park for visibility

Park in a busy, well-lit area, and avoid concealment from larger vehicles, fences, or foliage. The greater the chances are that someone might see a crime in progress, the lower the chances are that the potential thief will attempt it.

Be prepared

Never leave your vehicle unattended with the engine running. Avoid overloading yourself with packages. Carry your cell phone with you while you shop. When shopping with kids, teach them to find a store clerk if you get separated
