Waitress Saves Life with Heimlich Maneuver

On Saturday,October 5, 2013 at the Double Tree in Sacramento, Ca Roseville citizen KarissaHuerta was awarded a Certificate of Valor by the California State FirefightersAssociation (CSFA). The CSFA annually hosts a dinner ceremony to honoringnumerous heroes throughout the state.

While workingat the new Black Bear Diner in Roseville, Huerta was alerted to a patron whowas choking and had complete airway obstruction. Huerta jumped into action andadministered the Heimlich Maneuver to the elderly man who was unable tobreathe. She was able to clear the obstruction which gave the man the abilityto breathe again.

Roseville FireCaptain Scott Milligan and Division Chief Kathy Finney attended the ceremony tohonor the young woman. Finney commented that "Huerta's quick thinking likelysaved the man’s life" and “her actions prove the importance of learning simplebut effective life saving techniques like the Heimlich and Hands OnlyCPR.”
