The Art of Public Safety Dispatching
The world of public safety dispatching is extremely complex. Public safety dispatchers (PSD's) must be masters of communication - listening, hearing, and communicating critical, sometimes life-saving information quickly, accurately, and effectively. They must be able to adapt to ever-changing technology, manipulating equipment while talking and listening, oft times simultaneously. Because the needs of the community don't end at 5:00 p.m., dispatchers work nights, weekends, and holidays, 24-hours a day, 7 days a week.
While successful PSD's possess various skill sets - that of parent, teacher, counselor, and computer technician, to name a few, perhaps their most important ability is to understand and embrace the mission and vision of those that they serve. The Mission Statement of Roseville's public safety communicators makes the role of PSD very clear.
