Upgrading the water distribution system

Beginning February 2021, we are working on a project in the Hillcrest/Downtown area to replace underground water pipelines and upsize fire hydrants.

The distribution system is more than 60 years old and does not meet today’s needs. With this in mind, this project is critical to keep pace with utility standards by replacing aging infrastructure, maintaining adequate flows for drinking water supplies, and providing necessary fire protection.

This project comes on the heels of a storm drain (project details here) and accessibility improvement project and wastewater collection repairs. Finishing the underground utility work this year helps reduce additional disruptions in your neighborhood in the future.

Environmental Utilities and Public Works will coordinate roadway rehabilitation and resurfacing (details of citywide resurfacing here), once we complete necessary underground utility work.
