History of the Roseville Public Library

The Roseville Public library was signed into existence by the City of Roseville’s Board of Trustee (City Council), William Sawtell, on the 16th of January 1911 under city ordinance  number 37.  In 1912, with the assistance of the renown philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, the Roseville Public Library opened its doors to citizens of the region, assisting them in their reading and information needs. Located at 557 Lincoln Street the Carnegie building still stands and serves as a museum for Roseville's cultural heritage.

Through the years there were multiple branch locations explored to better serve the growing community and their needs.  In 1956, the Veterans Memorial Hall in Royer Park had its grand opening and served as the first branch library to the community. After the Veteran's Hall had been closed for some time, the Coloma Way branch opened its doors in 1978, operating well into the mid 90s. In 1979, books and material were moved from the aging Carnegie building to the downtown library off of Taylor Street heralding a new main library facility for the city. Within a decade, the Maidu branch opened and has been catering to patrons of Eastern Roseville since. In Western Roseville, the Marha Riley branch opened its doors in 2008, serving local communities too far to be served by the other locations.

Currently there are three branches of the Roseville Public Library: The Downtown Roseville Library near Royer Park and the Civic Center, the Maidu branch in Maidu Regional Park, and the Martha Riley Community Library located at Mahany Park.
