We want to keep you cool, safe and happy this summer. Check out these free or low cost tips you can use during these hot summer months.
Use your windows to gain cool air and keep the heat out – When it cools off at night, open your windows enough to gain ventilation, but not open enough for someone to gain access. Look at purchasing window locks for any of your open windows. In the morning, shut the windows and blinds to capture the cool air.
Operate your thermostat efficiently – Keep your house warmer than normal when you are away and set the thermostat setting to 78 ° when you’re home. Also, avoid setting your thermostat to a colder setting than normal when you turn on your air conditioner. It will not cool your home any faster and could result in excessive cooling and unnecessary expense.
Lower your water heater temperature – Water heating accounts for about 18% of the energy consumed in your home. Turn down the temperature to the warm setting (120°) in the summer months.
Don’t forget to hydrate – Children and older adults are especially at risk for becoming dehydrated due to the way their body responds to hot temperatures. So when the temperatures rise, make sure you drink plenty of water.
