The investigations unit conducts follow-up on crimes that have potential suspects or leads, but are too complex or time-consuming for the originally assigned patrol officer to complete in a timely manner. Investigators also handle cases that require special training, equipment or other resources. Also housed within the investigations unit are: the crime suppression unit, threat assessment, the crime analysis unit, registrant and permit processing, and the real time crime center.
The investigators, who are also called detectives, specialize in the following areas:

- Crimes against Persons - Homicide, robbery, sexual assault and other sex crimes, child abuse and missing person cases.
- High Tech Crimes - Investigation of computer crimes, cellular phone extractions, internet crimes against children, and other cases which require specialized training and expertise.
