Saving water in the new year

Updated December 13, 2023

As 2023 ends, try these tips over the holidays and as you approach 2024. Here are some handy ideas – or resolutions – on how to have a fun and water-efficient new year:

  • If you're cleaning the good china or silverware after your NYE party, they most likely require hand washing. Fill one basin with soapy water and the other with rinse water.

  • Scrape dishes into the trash instead of using the sink's garbage disposal.

  • Wash fruits and vegetables in a small pan instead of rinsing them under running water.

  • Be sure to check the house for leaks as you return your home to normal. For example, a running toilet can waste about 200 gallons every day.

  • As you deep clean the guest bathroom, consider replacing the old showerhead, faucet, or faucet aerator with WaterSense-labeled ones.

  • That full household created a lot of extra laundry and dishes. So remember to run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when full.

And hopefully, Santa brought you a new WaterSense or ENERGYSTAR-labeled dishwasher or clothes washer this year!
